Here are a few examples of the types of issues and problems Young Global Citizens are tackling in cities and towns around the globe.
Bosnia-Herzegovina
Special Needs Students in Schools
Team Members in Brčko include Muslims, Croats and Serbs and are known as “the children of the war.” The Brčko Young Global Citizens members presented government officials with hundreds signatures from citizens supporting their petition to integrate special needs students into mainstream classes and provide necessary equipment (hearing devices, wheel chairs, etc.). The local government has accepted the team’s petition and is considering revising the regulations regarding students with special needs.
Colombia
Establish a Town Constitution
In the 1990s the idyllic village of Alejandría, Colombia was ravaged by the drug cartels. Hundreds of family members were kidnapped, tortured or killed. Today the village is struggling to reclaim its proud heritage as peaceful ranchers, farmers and coffee growers. Faced with many social problems the team decided on the unique solution of writing a new town constitution to all of the issues they face. The petition was unanimously approved by the city council, accepted by the townspeople, and is now used as a model for other towns and villages throughout Colombia.
India
Restore historic monuments
India’s proud heritage is reflected in the majestic monuments throughout the city. Unfortunately many of these memorials and tombs are sadly neglected and in terrible disrepair. Team members in Delhi took on the challenge of restoring historic monuments near their school. The Young Global Citizens were successful in convincing officials to repair the tombs, erect gates and station guards to protect the monument from drug dealers and vandalism. In addition the students established an ongoing tutoring program for the children living in the slums near the monument.
Indonesia
Taxation of Silversmiths
After interviewing silversmiths, craftsmen, and business owners in Kotegede, team members presented a proposal the local government to eliminate or reduce taxation on the industry. The regional government endorsed the team's petition and sent it on to the central government for consideration.
Jordan
School Violence
Young Global Citizens in Al Karak took on the sensitive issue of violence in schools that includes student against student, teacher against student and student against teacher. Teenage girls and boys from many religious faiths collaborating for the first time in their lives, established an awareness program for elementary school children that has expanded to schools throughout Al Karak.
Russia
Teenage Gambling
Team members in Samara took on the Russian mafia to eradicate underage gambling. The team’s grassroots campaign included newspaper articles, appearances on television and radio programs and petitions to government officials. In response President Putin enacted legislation to close casinos in Samara and throughout Russia and establish state-controlled gambling centers in four designated cities.
Senegal
Clean Water
Young Global Citizens in Ross Bethio attacked the life-threatening problem of unsafe drinking water. The team organized a protest march to support their petition demanding clean water. As a result an abandoned water tower and filtration system was completed and everyone in the village has clean water in their homes.
USA
Teenage Obesity
Team members in Vancouver Washington are well aware of the teenage obesity epidemic throughout the nation. In response they proposed an across-the-board change n the school lunch program for their school district to provide healthier meals in school cafeterias. The school board accepted the proposal and collaborated with members of the team to create a new nutrition policy for the entire district.
